Hidden in a mountainous landscape and scattered in a wide and sometimes difficult-to-reach area, the rock-hewn churches of Tigray have been almost unknown abroad since the 1960s, though local monks have used them for centuries. These churches offer visitors the chance to see splendid artistic marvels and have the extraordinary opportunity of experiencing a spiritual world remote in time and place. A trip to these churches – across very rough terrain in a few cases – is well worth the effort, for they offer astonishingly beautiful views that can be enjoyed in peace and complete silence.
